Mathematics

Our aim is to provide relevant mathematical experiences for all students.   This requires taking account of potential ability and preferred learning style, at the same time catering for specific learning difficulties, gender and ethnicity.

The Department seeks to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics by:

  • developing to the maximum each pupils’ understanding of mathematics in all its forms

  • seeing it as an interesting and attractive subject in its own right

  • using practical projects to help pupils appreciate the creative and aesthetic aspects of the subject

  • ensuring that persistence through sustained work is rewarded

  • giving credit and praise to improve confidence

  • encouraging students to set themselves individual targets that extend their learning

  • offering a variety of approaches to teaching and learning to engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation

  • encouraging group participation in UKMT challenges, other competitions and enrichment opportunities to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics

  • smoothing the transition for pupils between Key Stages and ensure progression in teaching and learning throughout their time at The New Eccles Hall School

  • ensuring pupils possess the knowledge, skill, concepts and attitudes to equip them for adult life

At the end of his/her mathematical education in this school, each pupil will be able (relevant to his/her age/ability):

  • to experience satisfaction in and enjoyment of his/her mathematical achievements

  • to obtain his/her best possible level at each of the Key Stages 1, 2 and 3

  • to obtain a relevant formal mathematical qualification at the end of Key Stage 4

Schemes of Work

Long term planning is based on the yearly teaching programme set out in the National Numeracy Strategy at the Foundation stage, KS1, KS2, KS3.

Edexcel specifications are followed for GCSE Mathematics, GCSE Statistics, Adult Numeracy Level 1 and 2.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Schemes of Work are based on the Ginn Abacus Scheme and Textbooks.

Key Stage 3 Schemes of Work are based on the Collins Maths Frameworking Scheme and Textbooks.

Key Stage 4 Schemes of Work use Heinemann GCSE Higher and Foundation Textbooks.
