Modern Foreign Languages

The aim of the Modern Languages Department is to give pupils the opportunity to learn a language in a structured and stimulating environment.  French is learnt for a real purpose.

The school owns a house in the beautiful region of the Massif Central which pupils will visit several times.  French is taught throughout the school.  We have a French native speaker and a German specialist on the staff.

When pupils wish to study another language in addition to French, the school endeavours to accommodate this by offering private tuition.

Lower Juniors
We introduce French as early as in the Reception Year.  We use songs, story -telling and fun games.  Children develop a good accent and confidence.  Learning traditional French songs is also part of the syllabus.
the French class room

French is taught by a native speaker once a week.

Upper Juniors
Children come to the French classroom and enjoy French twice a week.  Children use the interactive whiteboard to play language games.  There is still plenty of singing.

We are very lucky to have the use of the ‘French house’ and Year 6 visit France for a week.  There is no better way to motivate children and to make it ‘real’ for them!

Key stage 3
Children are set at key stage 3 and are taught by two experienced teachers.  We use the Expo course and many of our own resources.  Year 8 have a residential trip to France.

Key stage 4
We offer GCSE as an option and it has become more and more popular in the last few years.  We use the Edexcel examination board.
