English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The New Eccles Hall School accepts students, for whom English is not their first language, for short, medium and long term stays in the school and there are various courses which will support all pupils no matter the level of their English skills.

Courses are available to International Students - the lengths varying according to the needs of each individual.   It is important before entry that the school has as much information  as possible about the student in order to plan their programme.

Students staying for long term study will work on the Cambridge ESOL suite of examinations, starting at an appropriate level to encompass prior learning, and will move on to the next level when appropriate.

These levels are:

  • Key English Test.  (KET)

  • Preliminary English Test  (PET)

  • First Certificate in English.  (FCE)

  • Certificate in Advanced English. (CAE)

As well as the above, in Year 12  the EAL department focuses on,   and  prepares students for,  the International English Language Testing System  (IELTS)  examinations to help facilitate their future entrance to higher education.

Short Term Integration Courses

The integration package offered by New Eccles Hall School is  flexible and designed to suit all levels.  These can vary in length from as little as four weeks duration  and upwards for any length of time in agreement with the school and the parent.  These students will be fully integrated into the school boarding community  and will receive group EAL support throughout their stay.    This will ensure maximum benefit from their course.

Pastoral support for all students is important and the Head of EAL monitors the progress of students not only academically but also socially.    The boarding house staff are also available to assist students settle in and deal with problems and to communicate with parents.  Students must feel settled and secure within the school community in order to progress and make the most of their time in the school.
