A BTEC First Certificate is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

Projects will relate to local, regional and national Theatre, Music Industry, Television and Radio Broadcasting.

You will be expected to undertake your own research and make use of ICT and libraries.

You need to be open to all debates, discussions and suggestions by all in the group and be able to offer your own.

Specialist Units Include:

  • Performing dance

  • Solo Musical Performance

  • Working as a Musical Ensemble

  • Performing Scripted Plays

  • Exploring Musical Composition

Additional Qualifications

Your programme of study will include the further development of Key Skills, Wider key Skills and CoPE, all of which equate to a further four GCSE’s.

We do provide all students access to additional national qualifications. It must be emphasised however, that although we endeavour to provide opportunities for students to complete the qualifications successfully, we cannot guarantee all students will meet the prerequisites nor can we guarantee they will achieve the assessment criteria as a high level of skills and knowledge are required to achieve the qualifications successfully.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous through assignments. A range of assessment methods are used including written tasks, group and individual presentations, reports, video analysis and practical skill observations. All units are assessed, graded and internally verified. A sample of units is then externally verified. An overall grade for the qualification is then awarded according to the accumulative score of all units achieved.

Where Next?

On successful completion of this course students can progress on to a level 3 course, such as the BTEC National Certificate or employment within the performing arts industries.
