BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design

This course is a Level 2 course, intended for students who require a broad based Art and Design qualification. It introduces you to the employment area you have selected and provides a good basis for you to progress on to a more advanced (Level 3) work-related qualification.

The BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design is composed of four core units that all students take, and two specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study a particular area in more depth.

Core Units:

  • 2D and 3D Visual Communication

  • Contextual References in Art and Design

  • Explore and Develop Art and Design Ideas

  • Produce an Art and Design Outcome

This course is suitable if you're looking for an entry course which provides a broad-based Art and Design qualification. It introduces you to the employment area you have selected and provides a good basis for you to progress on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

It will appeal to students who enjoy studying an area that is relevant to their own lives and experiences, want the opportunity to carry out practical work and have an interest in the practical nature of art, craft and design.

Specialist Units:

  • Working to Graphic Design Briefs

  • Working to Photography Briefs

  • Working to Textile Briefs

  • Working to Multimedia Briefs

  • Working to a Visual Arts Brief

Students are required to select two of the above specialist units.

Additional Qualifications

Your programme of study will include the further development of Key Skills, Wider Key Skills and CoPE, all of which equate to a further four GCSE’s.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous through assignments. A range of assessment methods are used including written tasks, group and individual presentations, reports, video analysis and practical skill observations. All units are assessed, graded and internally verified. A sample of units is then externally verified. An overall grade for the qualification is then awarded according to the accumulative score of all units achieved.
