BTEC First Certificate in Children's Care, Learning and Development

The BTEC First Certificate in Children’s Care, Learning and Development is designed to provide a nationally accepted specialist work related qualification at an introductory level, which provides preparation for employment.

To achieve this qualification, students must undertake 60 hours of work placement and study three units, which are assessed by written assignments.

This is an exciting, stimulating and rigorous course, suitable for students who wish to work in a professional capacity with young children. Students who successfully complete the course will gain Assistant Practitioner Status which will enable you to work with young children in a supervised capacity.

Course Units:

  • Child development

  • Keeping children safe

  • Communication with children and adults

With a high practical content, this qualification would be particularly useful to those planning to work in the child care industry.

Additional Qualifications

Your programme of study will include the further development of Key Skills, Wider key Skills and CoPE, all of which equate to a further four GCSE’s.

We do provide all students access to additional national qualifications. It must be emphasised however, that although we endeavour to provide opportunities for students to complete the qualifications successfully, we cannot guarantee all students will meet the prerequisites nor can we guarantee they will achieve the assessment criteria as a high level of skills and knowledge are required to achieve the qualifications successfully.

  • First Aid

  • Basic Food Hygiene

  • Preparation of Risk Assessments

Assessment

Assessment is continuous through assignments. A range of assessment methods are used including written tasks, group and individual presentations, reports, video analysis and practical skill observations. All units are assessed, graded and internally verified. A sample of units is then externally verified. An overall grade for the qualification is then awarded according to the accumulative score of all units achieved.

Where Next?

On successful completion of this course students can progress on to a level 3 course, such as the BTEC National Certificate in Children’s Care, Learning and Development. Students may also progress directly into employment in the pre-school and child care industries.
