Albemarle International Study Centre

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Department

The New Eccles Hall School welcomes International Students  into their community of pupils, parents and staff.  Total integration into the academic and social life of the school is possible and the contribution made by international students only serves to enhance the provision of the school in the very broadest sense.

Whilst all students enjoy a very wide and challenging curriculum and extracurricular programme,  international students need measured individual and group support in order to fully access their courses and make progress across all  areas, thereby   self-confidence grows and time spent in the school and the country has much greater benefit in the long term.

The New Eccles Hall School accepts students for short, medium and long term stays in the school and there are various courses which will support all pupils no matter their length of their programme.

It must be emphasised that The New Eccles Hall School carefully monitors the number of international students in the school and in each age group so that the balance of the whole community is maintained and that the  benefit from total immersion in English language and culture is ensured.

The EAL department at The New Eccles Hall School serves to support all students for whom English is not their native language.  Courses are available to International Students - the lengths varying according to the needs of each individual.  It is important before entry that the school has as much information about the student in order to plan the programme of support.

Students staying for long term study will work on the Cambridge ESOL suite of examinations, starting at an appropriate level to encompass prior learning, and will move on to the next level when appropriate.

These levels are:

Key English Test.  (KET)

Preliminary English Test  (PET)

First Certificate in English.  (FCE)

Certificate in Advanced English. (CAE)

In Year 12 the EAL department focuses on, and  prepares students for,  the Independent English Language Teaching Society  (IELTS)  examinations to help facilitate their future entrance to higher education.

Short Term Integration Courses

The integration package offered by New Eccles Hall School is  flexible and designed to suit all levels. These can vary in length from as little as four weeks duration  and upwards for any length of time in agreement with the school and the parent. These students will be fully integrated into the school boarding community  and will receive group EAL support throughout their stay.    This will ensure maximum benefit from their course.

Pastoral support for all students is important and the Head of EAL monitors the progress of students not only academically but also socially.  The boarding house staff are also available to assist students settle in and deal with problems and to communicate with parents. Students must feel settled and secure within the school community in order to progress and make the most of their time in the school.

International Parents, Agents and Students wishing to take up a place at New Eccles Hall should make contact with the Admissions Secretary on admin@neweccleshall.com to discuss the process of entering the school. New Eccles Hall School will require information with regard to the previous education of the student, standard of English and the nature of the course they wish to study. The granting of a visa for study in the UK by the UK Border Agency requires detailed and precise information and New Eccles Hall can advise on this matter.

Welfare and Pastoral Care

All international students are encouraged to become fully integrated into the life of this busy school. Life in an English boarding school is more than just about academic studies. There are opportunities to take part in a wide variety of extracurricular activities and sports. All students are assigned to one of the two boarding houses depending on age. Each boarding house has a Housemaster along with a number of house tutors who are responsible for the welfare of boarding students. In addition after one term in the school each student is able to select a member of staff who takes on the role of personal tutor. Tutor selection by the student ensures that there is an adult on the staff able to look after the personal needs and concerns of all pupils. The personal Tutor is a useful point of contact for parents and guardians. In addition the Teacher in charge of EAL is responsible for overseeing the welfare of all international students at New Eccles Hall.

Academic Studies and Reports

New Eccles Hall School is a small community and courses can be adapted to suit the particular ability and aptitude of the student. The willingness to enter fully into the life of the school will have a major influence in the success achieved with the academic courses.

Details of the academic courses available are located under Subjects and Courses. The school operates a system where pupils are assessed by staff every three weeks (Tri Weekly Marks). The results of these assessments are sent to parents. In addition two full academic reports are sent out each year. Parents are also able to visit the school to consult with the Headmaster and his staff. For parents and guardians living some distance from the school e mail communication is welcomed in order to ensure that contact is regular and information with regard to progress in all aspects of school life efficiently communicated.

Two detailed Letters From Eccles are sent out to parents and guardians each term reporting on various aspects of school life and giving notice of forthcoming events and activities. These are also available in the website. The What’s New section of this website also updates parents of events at the school.

Outside the Classroom

One advantage of being part of the busy community of a British boarding school is the opportunity to become involved with so many activities and sports which take place at evenings and weekends. New Eccles Hall School provides a wide range of sporting activities, from the regular team sports through to individual sports such as horse riding, dance and shooting. Extracurricular activities are high on the agenda at the school and students are able to link these activities into The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme from Year 10 through to Year 13. The scheme is well respected and recognizes skills and talents. Taking part in activities and projects extends the experience and knowledge of British culture and assists in developing a higher level of English language skills.
